Stuff:2

And so, emboldened by spring cleaning I began to tackle my cupboard study (you really couldn’t swing a cat in here).
For years I have had old college notes and essays stored in files. I kept them thinking they might one day come in useful and you know what? They never did….
Information imbibed, forgotten or rejected- a stack of notes over 70cm tall once it had been taken out of the folders. In terms of lecture time/preperation time etc it must have represented over 2000 hours work.
Initially there was some regret, but mostly I just feel freedom. There is only so much time that you can hold on to stuff before the holding on weighs you down so much so that you stop noticing the present and looking for the future. Next year I may be prepared to discard 20 years worth of sermons.
Travelling through life more lightly feels so much more liberating. I may soon be able to swing a very small cat in here, or at least able to take it for a waltz.

I’ve just shredded 25 years’ worth of sermons, and I don’t miss them at all. In fact, reading some of the earlier ones I don’t know how I ever had the nerve to stand up and deliver them, let alone write them in the first place!
Thank you for your comment. I will have to get there eventually…. I managed to throw out some sermons I had preached as a student in the mid 80s that are masterpieces in youthful arrogance. So far I have thrown nothing away since I started lay preaching ‘properly’ in 1992…
