A week of quotes:6

It’s Thomas Merton again….being a politics graduate I pride myself on my use of secondary sources, without reading the original. Being a theology graduate (did you notice the subtle ‘I am very brainy’ thing going on there?) I know I need to take time to listen and not just hear my sources. I really should have a go at reading a Thomas Merton book and not just quote him…
‘I am not so sure of myself and do not claim to have all the answers. In fact, I often wonder quite openly about these “answers,†and about the habit of always having them ready. The best I can do is to look for some of the questions.’

That could almost be one of my proof texts for life…so onto a hymn. Today’s hymn is HP739 ‘May the Mind of Christ my saviour’
May the mind of Christ, my Savior,
Live in me from day to day,
By His love and power controlling
All I do and say.
May the Word of God dwell richly
In my heart from hour to hour,
So that all may see I triumph
Only through His power.
May the peace of God my Father
Rule my life in everything,
That I may be calm to comfort
Sick and sorrowing.
May the love of Jesus fill me
As the waters fill the sea;
Him exalting, self abasing,
This is victory.
May I run the race before me,
Strong and brave to face the foe,
Looking only unto Jesus
As I onward go.

Hi Graham, visiting via ASBO. Love the Merton quote – and yes, maybe you should read some! I reckon ‘The Intimate Merton’- which is a selection from his seven volumes of journals is a good place to start – fascinating, honest and challenging – and the format of journal entries makes it an easy one to keep on the go alongside evrything else one needs must do and read. Athough having said that though, I seem to remember starting it and then, several hours later, wondering where the morning had gone!
Thanks for the comment and recommendation. I have put this on my wish list!
